I encourage you to download and post it right where you will see it in the morning to uplift and inspire you each day. I love the card we created last year so much that this year’s design is very similar. The message is new.

I wrote these words, keeping in mind that you would read them to yourself, to give yourself a boost and set yourself up for a great day. We can all do well to remind ourselves to be enthusiastic, bolder and to take a risk to achieve a goal.

Download this card and let it serve as a reminder of how powerful you are and all that is possible for you with each day.

Editor’s note: I just got a thank you from Madeline E. who thanked me for this article and the impact it had on her. I wrote this article in 1998. A little know secret is the woman I am talking about at the top of the article is my mom.

Living Without Regrets
In my neighborhood there is a building that has a white awning with green lettering that reads “No Regrets Apartments.” An energetic, friendly and eccentric woman of a certain age owns the building. It is the theme by which she lives her life. She has lived in the same neighborhood all her life, yet she corresponds with friends all over the country and world. She never learned how to drive, yet gets around twice as much as people half her age. She sometimes skips lunch but a day never passes that she doesn’t enjoy some gourmet chocolate. For her whole life, even when dining in fancy restaurants, she always eats her dessert first. She is on the move, living by her own rules, always looking forward, never looking back.

When I walk by the building I am reminded of the importance of living without regrets. Every day, every moment, we have a choice to be fully who we want and dream to be, or to pretend that we are less magnificent than our true selves— to pretend we have few wants, few desires and few ideas for how we really want our lives to be. Have you chosen to reach for the stars while living a life full of possibilities and passion, or to do you keep holding on to the railing, passing time in the seat of the mundane, thinking about what might have been?

You are responsible for making sure you are served up a full helping of life. No one else can go to life’s buffet line for you. You won’t get what you want if you let anyone or anything else select your main course.

If you want a life with no regrets, you have to live each day with no regrets, to do that means you are living authentically. Authentic living means you are being true to yourself, paying attention to what you truly want and not letting fear, or what other people will think, stop you. This fulfilling lifestyle involves doing what you want to do, going where you want to go, being who you want to be. You know you are living and working without regrets when you are fully engaged, alert, alive, enthusiastic, and in action in your life.

When you are living your life authentically, problems are seen as possibilities; obstacles are seen as opportunities to learn and to do things differently. What would be different for you if you were truly living an authentic life? Would you go back to school and study ballroom dancing, Buddhism or beer brewing; travel through India on a bike; risk that romance with the new neighbor; start a new business?

The only obstacle between you and a life without any regrets is you.

Take the time. In the words of George Elliot,”It is never too late to be what you might have been.” If you are ready for a new proactive lifestyle, where you will be more fulfilled and squeeze more juice out of every day, read on:

Strategies for Living Without Regrets

1. Commit Yourself to Authentic Living
Right now this is the only life you have. Make an agreement with yourself that you are not going to sit this one out. Commit to being a participant, not an observer. Commit yourself to the process of finding and following your dreams, wants and desires.

2. Point Out Past “Pro-Actions”
Make a list of all the moments in your life when you felt most alive. Then identify what was it about each of those experiences that made you feel that way. For example, if you identified serving in the Peace Corp as a time of aliveness, identify if it was the adventure, the opportunity to educate others, to help shape a community, or learning about another culture, that was the real positive and invigorating part of the experience. Alternatively, if you felt proactive when you first used a computer, was it doing something new, achieving a goal or actually working with technology that made you feel great?

3. Tolerate Nothing
Ask yourself, what are you tolerating in your life? Is there a health challenge you are not addressing, a relationship you have long outgrown, a home full of paraphernalia that is crowding you? If you are not being proactive in life and handling these things, you are tolerating and being reactive to them and how they impact you.

4. Identify “No Regrets” People
Make a list of ten people you are acquainted with that you believe live life fully and authentically. These are the people you want to spend time with, collaborate with, pioneer with, play with. Reach out to a few of them and make something happen.

5. Jot it Out
Keep a journal for a week and notice when you are feeling the most alive. Write these things down, and then at the end of the week reread your journal and see if there are any common threads or directions that need further investigation.

6. Try New Things
Make a list of all the things you would like to do. Add to the list everyday. Once a week, for six weeks, try something new. In addition to having new experiences and perhaps finding some new talents and passions, living without regrets means trying everything you want to try.

7. Get Into Action
Once you commit to proactive living—living without regrets—the only thing left to do is get moving, get working on it, get going. Write out all the big and small action items necessary to get you living your proactive lifestyle. Start small with little steps, and as momentum builds you will find yourself naturally engaging fully in life, naturally not holding back.

As you begin this new lifestyle, watch closely and notice what is different. Maybe soon you will place an awning or a plaque, or even a welcome mat by your front door that lets all who enter know: here lives a person with no regrets.

I love this time of year and the opportunity to publicly talk about gratitude, though it is a worthy topic all year round. I was raised in an Italian American household and I lived in Italy for a year. When I am very grateful for something the Italian phrase mille grazie pops in my head. This means one-thousand thanks. If I took the time, I could easily think of one-thousand different things, people, ideas, places, experiences, rights and privileges for which I am truly and deeply grateful. I will refrain and mention only a few.

I am grateful for the raviolis (made from my grandmother’s recipe) that will grace the table at Uncle Sal’s country home on Thursday and all the beautiful people that make up the Rando clan that I will have a chat and share some laughs with.

I am grateful for all the people on my THRIVE Team. All the positive, professional, self-motivated folk that help my business run well and are living the entrepreneurial lifestyle. I am grateful for the ladies on the board of directors for A Good Deed Tea that like me want to uplift underserved women and girls around the globe.

I am grateful that I am off the Carnival Splendor cruise ship that got stranded at sea and grateful for the future Hawaiian cruise on my calendar. It is important to always get back on the horse—or the cruise ship.

I will not continue to one-thousand. Instead I will close by mentioning the two most important things. I am grateful that I get to do work in the world that fulfills my purpose of helping women succeed and that I have a good loving husband.

Mille Grazie for all this and more.

Please tell me what you are grateful for.

When someone who is not a client, who I have never met or spoken with before, tells me how my work has uplifted them or their business.

My book, Learn to Power Think, has been published in several countries, and in our virtual world podcasts, videos and articles can be seen by all. I love that. I get emails and sometimes even calls from people sharing how the words in that book, or the business building ideas in a video or podcast made a difference for them. I am genuinely touched. I am given a huge dose of positive energy, or what I like to call positive emotional capital. It makes me feel like Wonder Woman®, and that all the hours are really worth it. We benefit greatly from the positive emotional capital we can gain from our business.

I encourage you to work for more then just monetary capital. Positive emotional capital is powerful. Those who do not have it get burnt out and stressed out— even when they are making a ton of money—because impacting people and uplifting their lives or their businesses is my greatest reward. It is better than any paycheck. Are you getting enough emotional capital? What can you do to get more?
